The Rheumatology Occupational Therapy (OT) service is based at Chapel Allerton Hospital on the lower ground floor. Referrals are accepted from LTHT healthcare professionals (via PPM+) where a patient may benefit from any of the following interventions:
Joint Protection Advice
The OT service works with patients on a 1:1 basis to provide joint protection education and practical solutions to facilitate personal care and the completion of domestic/ work related tasks. In addition to demonstrating alternative movement techniques, small items of equipment can also be provided.
Equipment Provision
To protect joints and promote independence with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), the OT service at CAH has access to a limited range of small equipment (e.g. perching stools, sock aids and toileting equipment). For larger items of equipment or major home adaptations, the patient should contact Adult Social Care (Tel: 0113 2224401).
Energy Conservation & Pacing Advice
To assist patients with the completion of their daily activities, the OT service can provide advice on fatigue management & the pacing of tasks.
Work/ Ergonomic Assessment
To help patients remain in their current employment, the OT service can provide workstation assessment, signposting to suitable equipment (e.g. ergonomic keyboards and mice) and liaison with employers/ workplace Occupational Health departments.
Splinting
For patients experiencing pain, stiffness or swelling in their hands/ digits/ wrists/ elbows, the OT service can provide “off the shelf” and custom-made splints. These can be used to support function during activity or to rest a particular joint.
Hand Exercises
The fully evidenced ‘SARAH’ hand exercise programme is provided for those with a weak grip.
Pregnancy & Arthritis Advice
The OT service offers support for pregnant women (or those caring for a newborn/ small child) who are experiencing joint pain. Advice can include environment preparation, signposting to useful equipment, joint protection techniques and splinting to alleviate pain & stiffness.
