What is radiology?

Radiology is the medical speciality that uses imaging technology to look inside the body to diagnose, treat and monitor diseases and injuries. The vast majority of patients will experience some form of imaging as part of their patient journey. The service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) offers many different imaging types, from multiple locations across the city, alongside our Medical Illustrations team who support clinical imaging through photographer.

Scanning expertise

At Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) we offer a wide variety of scan types, providing complex images that many other hospitals can’t provide. As a regional centre and a large teaching hospital we are able to attract, train and develop the best clinical staff, who ensure the best quality images are captured, with detailed reporting to support diagnosis.

I’ve been referred for a scan

Following an appointment with your GP, or with a doctor at a hospital appointment, you may be referred to radiology (often called a scan or imaging). On these webpages you can find out more about the scan you have been referred for, check location details and contact us in case anything changes prior to your appointment.

If your doctor has said that you need to have images to help them diagnose a medical issue for you, then they will send a request to the Radiology team for this scan. Once this request has been reviewed and confirmed that it is the correct imaging for you, our booking team will contact you (by phone or letter) to organise an appointment for you.

Depending on the type of scan you have, the results may not be available straightaway as often a Radiologist or Radiographer (specialist in radiology) will need to review the images and report their findings. Therefore you may find that you will receive the results when you next see the doctor that sent your referral again.
