The ACP-Led Prostate Diagnostic Service provides rapid assessment, investigation, and management for patients referred through the Urgent Suspected Cancer (2-Week Wait) pathway with suspected prostate cancer.
Working closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialist and the wider Urology team, the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) coordinates the patient’s diagnostic journey, ensuring timely access to investigations, clear communication of results, and appropriate onward management.
Patient Pathway
Telephone assessment
- Review the referral, PSA, symptoms, medical history, and medications.
- Explain the diagnostic pathway and arrange any required investigations.
Face-to-face assessment
- Complete a clinical review, perform a digital rectal examination (DRE) if indicated.
- Assess fitness for investigations or treatment, review available results.
- Arrange further investigations (e.g. MRI or prostate biopsy) in line with local protocols.
Results and follow-up
- Discuss results with the patient.
- Refer appropriate cases to the Urology MDT.
- Arrange treatment, active surveillance, or discharge as appropriate.
