A large scanning arm will move over your body, usually your lower back and hips.
The test is painless and you do not go inside a tunnel.
It usually takes 10-20 minutes.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The amount of radiation is very low-much lower than a normal X‑ray.
It is safe for most people, but tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be.
How to Get Ready
Wear clothing without metal (for example: no zips, belts, or metal buttons if possible).
You can eat and drink normally.
If you take calcium tablets, you may be asked not to take them for 24 hours before the scan.
During the Scan
You will need to lie still, but you can breathe normally.
The scan does not touch you.
It should not hurt.
After the Scan
You can go back to your normal activities straight away.
A specialist will look at your results.
Your results will be sent to the doctor who referred you.
