Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology (IR) uses medical imaging to guide small instruments inside the body to diagnose or treat many conditions.

These procedures are done by specialist doctors called Interventional Radiologists.

IR treatments are usually minimally invasive, meaning smaller cuts, quicker recovery, and often no need for a hospital stay.

Interventional Radiology can help with:

  • Treating blocked or narrowed blood vessels
  • Draining infections or fluid collections
  • Treating some cancers
  • Placing feeding tubes or lines
  • Stopping bleeding
  • Treating kidney or gallbladder problems

Your appointment letter will explain the specific procedure you are having.

You will be looked after by a team of doctors, nurses, and radiographers.

Most procedures are done using local anaesthetic to numb the area.

Some patients may have sedation to help them relax.

You will be awake but comfortable during the procedure.

Interventional Radiology uses imaging such as X‑ray, ultrasound, or CT.
Radiation is kept as low as possible.
Please tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be.

Your letter will tell you if you need to stop eating or drinking.

You may need blood tests before the procedure.

Bring a list of your medications.

You may be asked to arrange for someone to take you home if sedation is used.

You will be monitored in the recovery area.

Most patients can go home the same day; some may need to stay overnight.

You will be given advice about looking after yourself at home.

Results and follow‑up plans will be sent to your referring doctor or team.
