An MRI scan uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body.
What to Expect
You will lie on a padded table that slides into the scanner.
The scanner is a long, open‑ended tube.
The scan is painless and usually takes 15-45 minutes.
You will hear loud tapping or buzzing sounds; earplugs or headphones will be given.
Safety
Because MRI uses a strong magnet, it is very important you tell us if you have:
1. A pacemaker or implanted device
2. Metal in your body (including surgical clips or implants)
3. Metal fragments in your eyes
4. Tattoos with metal‑based ink
5. Any history of metal work injuries
Please also tell us if you are pregnant.
How to Prepare
Wear comfortable clothes without metal (no zips, poppers, or underwire bras).
You may be asked to change into a gown.
Remove jewellery, watches, keys, bank cards, and anything metallic.
Most people can eat and drink normally unless your letter says otherwise.
During the Scan
You will need to lie as still as possible so the images are clear.
You can talk to the radiographer through an intercom at any time.
Some scans require an injection of contrast dye to help show certain areas more clearly.
After the Scan
You can return to normal activities straight away.
A specialist will review your images.
Results will be sent to the clinician who referred you.
